"ONE AT A TIME"
CONCEPT HAS RENEWED STRENGTH IN THE 21st CENTURY
NORTH BRANFORD, CT, October 15, 2003 - In this age of automation, items produced one at a time by master artisans using techniques passed from generation to generation are sought after and treasured by today's consumer.
Uno Alla Volta (www.oneatatime.com), a new catalog company is connecting artisans with those who appreciate finely crafted items - both functional objects such as walking sticks and sterling silver thimbles and decorative objects such as art glass and jewelry. The results of the catalog, which was launched in July, demonstrate the appreciation today's consumer still has for techniques of yesteryear.
Uno Alla Volta LLC (whose name means "One at a Time" in Italian) was created by Terri Alpert, recognized as one of the "New Breed of Innovators" by CatalogAge magazine and Entrepreneur of the Year by BusinessNewHaven. Ms. Alpert is also the founder and CEO of Professional Cutlery Direct LLC (PCD) which runs two catalog titles in the kitchenware field "Professional Cutlery Direct" and "PCD's Cooking Enthusiast." PCD was a three-time member of the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing privately held companies in the US, the recipient of the Inc/CISCO Growing with Technology Award, and the Award of Excellence from the International Association of Culinary Professionals.
When asked to describe how she came to develop the Uno Alla Volta brand, Ms. Alpert speaks of the universal theme she heard again and again from the many artisans with whom she worked. From knife makers in France to painters of elaborate stoneware in Poland, "each of these artisans spoke of knowing that they would be bringing a smile to the face of someone they would never meet half a world away. They all talked of leaving something of their souls behind in each work of their hands. I realized then why I had always treasured fine handcrafted objects and why they resonate so strongly with so many others."
Ms. Alpert also speaks of the incredible degree of skill required to accomplish many of these nearly lost arts. Years of apprenticeship are required to develop the finely tuned skills to "turn an ordinary conch shell into a timeless and detailed cameo representation of Venus, to fashion a hunk of steel into an elaborate pocket knife, to 'paint' with pieces of wood in the Italian tradition of Intarsia." So many of the artisans who partner with Uno Alla Volta have learned their trade from their fathers (and in some cases, mothers) as their fathers had before them. Many have chosen to carry on their family traditions and heritage, in spite of enormous pressure to find a more conventionally "modern" and financially secure career. Their legacy will be passed on to a new generation as long as the objects "crafted by their hands and touched by their souls can find a market," says Ms. Alpert. "The demand exists. Our job is to bring it all together - artisans from around the world - and those who have an appreciation for works, exquisitely crafted, one at a time."
